Immortality is one of the qualities and nature of the Godhead.
It is his state of eternal existence powered by a type of life that is without corruption, degeneration, or any sort of defect. It is the ability to live forever with the highest quality of life and existence possible.
The Bible teaches us that, in the beginning, God created Man in his image and likeness, and He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being (Gen 2:7). In Job 33:4, the bible shows us what that breath in Gen 2:7 is and what it constitutes.
It says; The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Furthermore, Job 34:14 says; If it were his intention, he withdrew his spirit and breath. Jesus also paralleled the wind (or air or breath) with the spirit in John 3:8. This goes on to show that the life of the first man and his early descendants was powered by the spirit.
God had warned Adam that if he disobeyed, he would surely die. Now, death, in this instance, is not death as we know it, it is the spiritual separation of man from the spirit that powered his existence. It is the spiritual death of a man. Isaiah 59:2 says, But your sin has separated between you and your God. What this means is that man fell to a lesser quality of life – which is still human life. Now, the bible teaches about different types of life.
We see the human or animal life, we see the spirit life, and we see eternal life – all authored by God.
Human life is in the blood. The Bible says the life of the flesh (humans and animals) is in the blood (Lev 17:11). Human life is an intangible force that animates people. Without life, the being is just piled dust in the shape of a human. The Bible teaches that this life is hidden in the blood, and we know from science that it is the blood that transports oxygen and other essential nutrients in the human body.
Human life is one of the basest levels of life as it is good enough for living. Ecclesiastes 3:19 says; Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. This life is subject to death for, from dust it was made, it shall return.
Spirit life is in the Soul.
The Bible says in Gen 2:7 that God breathed on Adam, and he became a living Soul. The soul is the real person and is where the spiritual connection and connectivity happen.
We saw that Adam became a living soul after receiving God’s spirit or breath. We have seen that human life is resident in the blood and is bound to perish, but the soul never dies – it lives forever.
However, the quality of life of the soul is dependent on what feeds it. In Adams’s case, we saw that the spirit powered his life, but sin separated him from the spirit, and his physical body responded in time.
In Gen 6:3, the Lord said, “My Spirit will not abide with humans forever, for they are mortal.”
In the part 3 of this series, we will deep dive into eternal life and the impact in our every day life.
